What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medical therapy that involves scraping of the skin. It is primarily used to reduce pain, limit inflammation, and open pores on the skin. Gua sha is traditionally used on acupuncture points of patients. However, it can also be applied to other parts of the body.

Gua Sha is offered in our Toronto medi spa location.

How does gua sha work?

Gua sha is done by applying pressure on the body using special tools. The most commonly used are horn combs, moxibustion sticks, or bone scrapers. Gua Sha is performed with the dominant hand of the practitioner on specific regions of the patient’s body. It can be performed along or across muscles and bones.

The technique is also known as “spooning” because the practitioner uses a horn comb, moxibustion blade or other implement to perform the scraping. Gua Sha is a technique that applies the principles of traditional Chinese medicine by manually stimulating points on the body with an instrument such as a smooth spoon, horn, or moxa stick.

Gua sha is usually performed by an acupuncturist, osteopath or physical therapist on the patient’s body. It can be applied to the back, arms and legs when indicated for pain relief.
