Thermage

Thermage is a noninvasive skin rejuvenation treatment that’s FDA-cleared for skin tightening on the face and body. Thermage works by using radiofrequency (RF) energy to heat the skin’s dermis (under the surface layer) and stimulate new collagen production. It’s a versatile treatment that can be used on the stomach, arms, backs of the hands, thighs, knees, and butt as well as around the eyes and along the jawline.

Thermage is offered in our Markham medi spa.

WHAT IS THERMAGE?

Thermage is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses radiofrequency (RF) technology to tighten and lift the skin. It is designed to stimulate collagen production, which helps improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

During the Thermage procedure, a specialized handheld device is used to deliver controlled RF energy to the skin’s deeper layers. This energy heats the collagen fibers, causing them to contract and tighten. The heating process also stimulates the production of new collagen over time, leading to gradual improvements in skin firmness and elasticity.

Thermage is commonly used to treat various areas of the body, including the face, neck, arms, abdomen, and thighs. It is a popular option for individuals seeking non-surgical skin tightening and rejuvenation without the need for downtime or recovery.

As with any cosmetic procedure, the results of Thermage may vary from person to person, and multiple treatment sessions may be recommended to achieve optimal outcomes

CANDIDACY FOR THERMAGE

Ideal candidates for Thermage generally include:

  • Mild to Moderate Skin Laxity: Individuals with mild to moderate skin sagging or laxity in areas such as the face, neck, abdomen, arms, or thighs may benefit from Thermage.
  • Aging Skin: Those experiencing signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of skin firmness, may be suitable candidates for the procedure.
  • Realistic Expectations: Having realistic expectations about the results is essential. Thermage can provide noticeable improvements in skin tightness and texture, but it may not achieve the same level of lift as surgical procedures.
  • Non-Surgical Preference: Candidates who prefer non-surgical alternatives for skin tightening and rejuvenation without downtime or recovery may consider Thermage.
  • Good General Health: Candidates should be in overall good health, with no medical conditions that could interfere with the treatment or healing process.
  • Skin Type: Thermage is suitable for various skin types and tones, making it an option for a wide range of individuals.

BENEFITS OF THERMAGE

Some common reasons why individuals choose Thermage include:

  • Skin Tightening: Thermage is effective at tightening loose or sagging skin on various areas of the body, including the face, neck, arms, abdomen, and thighs.
  • Wrinkle Reduction: It can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially in areas like the forehead, crow’s feet, and smile lines.
  • Non-Invasive: Thermage is a non-surgical and non-invasive procedure, making it a popular option for individuals who prefer to avoid surgery and its associated risks and downtime.
  • Collagen Stimulation: The treatment stimulates collagen production, which contributes to improved skin texture, firmness, and overall rejuvenation.
  • Quick Procedure: Thermage treatments are relatively quick, typically lasting 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the treated area.
  • Minimal Downtime: There is little to no downtime after Thermage, allowing individuals to resume their regular activities soon after the procedure.
  • Versatile: Thermage can be used to address various skin concerns on different parts of the body, providing versatile treatment options.
  • Long-Lasting Results: The collagen stimulation induced by Thermage can lead to long-lasting improvements in skin tightness and texture

PAIN MANAGEMENT DURING THERMAGE

While pain tolerance can vary from person to person, there are several approaches to help manage discomfort during Thermage:

  • Topical Numbing Cream: Before the procedure, a topical numbing cream may be applied to the treatment area to help reduce sensitivity and discomfort during the treatment.
  • Cooling Feature: Thermage devices often incorporate a cooling feature that helps to enhance patient comfort during the treatment. This cooling mechanism can provide a soothing sensation on the skin while the radiofrequency energy is being delivered.
  • Oral pain relievers: Individuals may take over-the-counter Tylenol before the treatment to help manage any discomfort.

HOW LONG DOES THERMAGE RESULTS LAST?

After a Thermage treatment, patients may notice some immediate skin tightening effects due to the initial collagen contraction. However, the full effects of the procedure develop gradually over the following two to six months as the stimulated collagen production continues.

On average, Thermage results can last anywhere from one to two years. Some individuals may experience longer-lasting effects, while others may choose to undergo maintenance treatments after the initial results start to diminish.

To maintain the desired skin tightening effects, some patients opt for periodic touch-up treatments, typically every 12 to 24 months, depending on their skin’s response and individual needs.

It’s important to note that the natural aging process will continue after Thermage, and factors like sun exposure, lifestyle habits, and genetics can influence the longevity of the results.

What to expect?

During Thermage treatment, here’s what you can generally expect:

  • Preparation: Before the procedure, the treatment area will be cleansed, and if needed, a topical numbing cream may be applied to reduce discomfort during the treatment.
  • During Treatment: The healthcare professional will use a specialized handheld device that delivers controlled radiofrequency (RF) energy to the deeper layers of the skin. This energy heats the collagen fibers, promoting skin tightening and stimulating collagen production.
  • Sensations: As the RF energy is delivered, you may feel intermittent heating sensations on the skin, which is generally well-tolerated by most individuals. The device also incorporates a cooling feature to enhance comfort.
  • Duration: Thermage treatments typically last between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the treated area and the individual’s needs.
  • Immediate and Gradual Results: Some immediate skin tightening effects may be noticeable after the procedure due to collagen contraction. However, the full effects of Thermage develop gradually over several months as the stimulated collagen production continues.
  • No Downtime: One of the significant advantages of Thermage is that there is little to no downtime, and most individuals can resume their regular activities immediately after the treatment.
  • Temporary Side Effects: Mild redness or swelling may occur, but these effects usually subside within a few hours to a few days.

DOCTOR'S RECOMMENDATIONS

The following are post-procedure recommendations for Thermage:

  • Maintenance Treatments: Depending on individual responses and specific skin concerns, maintenance treatments may be recommended every 6 to 12 months. These follow-up treatments can help sustain the results and prolong the skin tightening effects achieved through Thermage.
  • Sunscreen: After the procedure and as part of daily skincare, it is essential to apply sunscreen every day. Sunscreen helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays and prevents premature aging, which can help maintain the benefits of Thermage and overall skin health.
