What it is

Low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (LI-ESWT) uses focused acoustic pulses delivered through the skin. The aim is regenerative: the pulses encourage new blood vessel formation and tissue repair in the treated area.

We use it within men's health and performance care, and it is always preceded by a physician assessment.

What the evidence shows

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomised trials report improvement in erectile function scores after LI-ESWT, with the clearest benefit when it is combined with oral PDE5-inhibitor therapy. Reviews consistently report no serious adverse events.

The same reviews note that trial quality varies and that larger, longer sham-controlled studies are still needed. We think it is fair to say the treatment is promising and well tolerated rather than settled, and your physician will discuss that with you honestly.

Common questions常见问题

Shockwave therapy delivers controlled acoustic pulses into targeted tissue to stimulate biological repair responses, blood flow and vascular function.

No. Medications such as sildenafil temporarily improve the erectile response by affecting blood flow when taken, while low intensity shockwave therapy is intended to influence the underlying penile vascular environment over a treatment series.

It may be considered for men with erectile dysfunction, particularly when reduced blood flow is thought to contribute. ED can also be related to hormones, medications, neurological conditions, diabetes, or psychological factors, so a medical assessment is important before deciding whether shockwave therapy is appropriate.

Shockwave therapy may be used for selected musculoskeletal concerns such as tendon related pain, tight or painful soft tissue, and certain shoulder or back pain conditions. The best results depend on the underlying cause, so an assessment is important before treatment.

Some patients notice improvement after the first few sessions, while others improve more gradually over several weeks. Results depend on the condition, how long it has been present, and how your body responds.

Published protocols typically run over six to nine weeks, with sessions delivering around 1,500 low-energy pulses across several sites. Sessions are short, need no anaesthetic and have no downtime.

Whether shockwave therapy is appropriate for you, and whether it should sit alongside other treatment, is decided at consultation.
